If You’re Tired of Getting Bit by Mosquitos, Try These 10 Plants

Easy-to-Grow Plants That Repel Mosquitos

It isn’t uncommon in South Florida for homeowners and their friends or family to gather around outside for a cookout, a few drinks, and even just to talk. Everything seems perfect in our beautiful weather. Unfortunately, it isn’t long before feeling something crawling on your leg and an unpleasant sensation that results from THE MOSQUITO BITE.

Mother nature always seems to come through when we truly need her, and mosquito issues are no exception. Check out some of our favorite plants that repel mosquitos that you can install in your yard or patio area!

Citronella

These plants that repel mosquitos seem like an easy entry. After all, citronella represents one of the most common, natural ingredients we can find in mosquito repellants. In Florida, Citronella is exceptionally easy to take care of with our lack of severe cold weather, in addition to the beautiful warm climate.

Catnip

Catnip contains a strong mosquito repelling chemical (and feline attractant) called nepetalactone. This is a top choice on our list of plants that repel mosquitos and is very easy to care for. However, take caution, catnip can prove quite evasive in garden beds.

Lavender

Most people associate lavender with a pleasant scent that actually contributes to a calm mind. Nonetheless, lavender is an awesome choice to keep mosquitos at bay as well.

Basil

This common spice that we find in pesto, salads, and delicious pasta dish is not nearly as popular with mosquitos. With a natural aroma that the plant emits, homeowners do not need to crush leaves or commit to any preparation in any way. Furthermore, basil remains toxic to mosquito larvae, making it the ideal solution to deter these insects from laying eggs.

Rosemary

Continuing with the popular restaurant ingredients, this seasoning provides repellent properties against a wide variety of insects. Keep some around, even throw leaves on fire for a wondrous, aromatic insect repellent.

Marigold

Marigolds are a beautiful edging annual flower that remains popular in vegetable gardens. They impart a distinct and strong scene as well as a zesty taste. They contain pyrethrum, a compound utilized in many modern insect repellents.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is a common approach to help reduce stress and alleviate stomach issues. It also tastes great in soups and other issues. However, it does represent an invasive species in a garden, so it’s essential to plant lemon balm elsewhere for a great entry on our favorite plants that repel mosquitos.

Geraniums

These flowers are lemon-scented, doing their part to keep mosquitos away from home. They also display gorgeous blooms in a wide variety of vibrant colors that present a perfect decorator.

Pennyroyal

Pennyroyal is one of the most potent plants that repel mosquitos while also combatting other flying insects like flies or fleas. The most effective administration is crushing pennyroyal into clothing and pockets.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a fast-growing plant that can invade a garden when left alone. However, peppermint oil is a great mosquito repellant that can also provide relief from those annoying, itchy bites.
