Backyard Maintenance Services

We know all about maintenance. We currently have a house in the center of a five-acre piece of property. Starting as a huge cow farm with barbed wire fencing, scrub trees, and bushes, we have landscaped it a little at a time, and we have maintained it for nearly 20 years.

So technically our backyard consists of about two acres. But as a master gardener, married to a gardener, actually our entire five acres is an enormous garden. Below are some landscape design tips on how to care for a large backyard.

Firstly, divide and conquer. Divide your backyard into “rooms” by specific areas to go out and enjoy. Perhaps a gazebo which tempts you to the back of the property, which you might not otherwise venture, is in order, or perhaps a fire pit, playground, pool or gazebo fun for you and your family. Or how about your own secret garden?

Secondly, consider staying in a fence for easy maintenance and a warm atmosphere. Within that space, you can have a patio, flower beds, herb gardens and a seating area. The possibilities are endless. This makes it easier to cut the rest of the yard and maintain.

Finally, got wood? Consider some of the great trees such as oaks and pines, and take some of the least desirable trees like mock orange and mimosa trees. This is called “forest management” and it will work for large wooded backyards too. Consider also a shade garden somewhere between trees or even a bluebird trail or a wild environment. This will allow you to create a backyard habitat for your family and furry critters.

Lawn Treatment

When maintaining a backyard, it is important to know;

  • When your plants will be in the sun or shade throughout the day; morning sun is a cooler sun and a great place for light shade to shade loving plants; midday sun is a hot sun and plants here must be able to withstand intense heat.
  • What your soil is made of- clay loam (good organic mix) or sand – Clay soil stays wet longer and requires much less watering. Clay soil is the main culprit in the sickly yellow leafed plantings that you see in many commercial landscapes, the plants are just drowning – loam or sandy soil drain faster and require more water and weekly monitoring.
  • If you have wetlands or drainage issues- where do your gutters drain; shady areas will stay wet longer and require less watering
  • If you have large trees shade beds, they will block rain from reaching the ground; plants will need more water here.
  • Plants are placed under a tree, in the root zone, will require more water and fertilizers, as the tree will absorb most of them.
  • If you have wind problems, fences can reduce or increase the wind and possible drying plants.

Once you know the different situations, your garden can present over time, you can start by choosing the plants that will bloom with you through the years. Aim for a low maintenance gardening experience by installing plants that ripen slowly and fill in time.

Adding shrubs as butterfly bush, spirea or Knockout Rose not only seasonal increase color but also help your backyard manageable because you cut or rejuvenate these shrubs each spring, reducing their size. Many perennials and ornamental grasses will have the same effect.
